It’s the smallest of the municipalities at the foot of the volcano and is surrounded by the steep wooded slopes of Mount Somma.
Like the nearby San Sebastiano, Massa was largely destroyed by the eruption of 1944, therefore it presents itself with a predominantly modern appearance.
The ancient Church of St. Mary is in ruins, but around the village you can admire some well-preserved Vesuvius farms, the most interesting of which, Masseria Rendita, is located upstream of the town.
